#30. Dear John

Prompt: “Write a ‘Dear John’ letter breaking up with your high-school sweetheart who’s in the army.”

Dear John,

I think this is the hardest letter I’ve ever had to write. I want to start by saying I’m so sorry and I hope that one day you’ll be able to forgive me. I’ve been trying to make this work for so long, but I just can’t do this anymore.

Every time you go away I feel like I have to put my life on hold waiting for you to come home, if you come home. I want to be able to take that new job at the other side of the country, I want to be able to build myself a life. One where I can settle down, get married, have kids. That feels like it’s impossible while you’re away all the time. I could never ask you to give up your job though.

All this time apart has put a strain on our relationship and my feelings have changed. I still love you, but I’m no longer in love with you. I’m sorry I had to tell you this way, but I had to do what was best for me. I need to break up with you. Please forgive me one day.
